Exam #1 ME 414 Mechanical Design I Spring, 2011 Instructions: This exam consists of three problems worth a total of 60 points. The only materials permitted are the textbook (Shigley et al .), a calculator and ONE SIDE of an 8.5"x11" HANDWRITTEN crib sheet, which MUST be turned in with the exam. 1. A circular steel shaft of diameter d =30 mm is required to support an applied moment M B , as shown in the figure below. The shaft is supported at its ends by ball bearings, which can be regarded as simple supports. The dimensions shown in the figure are a =125 mm and b =175 mm . Neglecting the bearing mounts at the ends, the shaft can be approximated as a uniform beam of diameter d . a) Determine the maximum allowable moment M B corresponding to each of the following design constraints, and state which constraint governs the design: i) The maximum allowable bending stress is ! all =500 MPa.
