Nicole Chan 6 th November 2010 Amanda Dietz Reading Assignment 2: The Unite as Model for Mass Housing 1. Le Corbusier’s Unite d’Habitation and Swiss Pavilion share many similarties and differences in regards to structure, organization and purpose. Both of these buildings manifest Le Corbusier’s utopian/socialist plan and design, the incorporation of the interior street linking buildings symbolize a “united community.” The Five Points of Architecture are evident in both buildings and there is emphasis on the pilotis and roof terrace in the Unite d’Habitation. The brise-soleil is a significant aspect at the Unite d’Habitation, they are patterned concrete walls that function as a sun-shade. Le Corbusier encourages outdoor activities at both buildings; thus, he creates a comfortable outdoor environment for human interaction. In terms of organization and materials, both Unite d’Habitation and the Swiss Pavilion are constructed from concrete and glass, and revolve around the same techniques of standardization and repetition. They also share the same ideals of integrating daily life with nature and blocks to signify a “unified community.” Both structures share the “mid-air” feature but it is for the individual at the Swiss Pavilion and the collective city at Unite d’Habitation. In William Curtis’ article, “The Unite d’Habitation at Marseilles as a Collective Housing Prototype,” he describes this feature as a “collective city floating above
