Saba Nafees 1B 13 th September, 2010 Grendel Chunk Writing Topic Sentence: Grendel is self-conscious and weary of his unworthy surroundings as he occupies a morbid place that has become unknown to him and realizes the utter isolation that divides his mother and him due to no mutual understanding and that he’s utterly alone, not even accepted by his own kind. Concrete Detail : “I was intensely aware of where I sat, the volume of darkness I displaced, the shiny-smooth span of packed dirt between us, and the shocking separateness from me in my mama’s eyes”(17). Commentary: Grendel feels unwelcome in his morbid surroundings. He is isolated from his own regular companions as they make him feel unwelcomed, highly self-conscious

Commentary: He knows where he belongs in his cave and perhaps in life. His alienations surprise him. He discovers that he has lost his last supporting companion, his mother. He has lost her due to utter absence of communication. Commentary: Due to his knowledge that his mother doesn’t understand him and that he is already isolated from her, he rejects her love and companionship. He realizes that he is utterly alone. Trapped in his determinism, he falls prey to isolation from everyone including his own mother....
