Unformatted text preview: COURSE DESCRIPTION There are three fundamental beliefs underlying the development of this introductory communication research course. First , since a clear understanding of the research process is necessary for all baccalaureate degree holders, you will be provided with a basic understanding of the research process. Second , Communication Studies students should have a broad understanding of the three basic approaches to communication research (historical-critical, qualitative, and quantitative) and specific methods used in the discipline (e.g., observation, interviews, surveys, and experiments). Third , students should be knowledgeable and critical consumers of communication related research. RISE Initiative This course meets the requirements of an “R” course as part of the RISE Challenge Initiative. As the Dean of Faculty explains: The IUPUI undergraduate educational experience is distinctive because it intentionally uses experiential learning to prepare students for graduate school, careers, and citizenship.
