Unformatted text preview: COURSE DESCRIPTION There are three fundamental beliefs underlying the development of this introductory communication research course. First , since a clear understanding of the research process is necessary for all baccalaureate degree holders, you will be provided with a basic understanding of the research process. Second , Communication Studies students should have a broad understanding of the three basic approaches to communication research (historical-critical, qualitative, and quantitative) and specific methods used in the discipline (e.g., observation, interviews, surveys, and experiments). Third , students should be knowledgeable and critical consumers of communication related research. RISE Initiative This course meets the requirements of an R course as part of the RISE Challenge Initiative. As the Dean of Faculty explains: The IUPUI undergraduate educational experience is distinctive because it intentionally uses experiential learning to prepare students for graduate school, careers, and citizenship.
