Stephanie Baggio Honors 101/201 Prof. Goffman 11 January 2011 Obi’s First Trip Home Upon Obi’s return to Umuofia after studying in England, he faces many challenges with his new education. These include pressures to meet expectations, temptations regarding bribes, and making decisions in beginning his new life as an educated Nigerian. With this university education, he feels compelled to make his own life choices, especially concerning marriage and finances. Obi’s trip back to Umuofia in the “mammy wagon” foreshadows several of the tribulations he encounters as a “too know” man (Achebe 49). In the back of the mammy wagon, the traders sing songs pertaining to women who become nurses or teachers instead of mothers. This song delineates Clara and foreshadows her successful occupation and relations with Obi. These relations indirectly lead to a confession by Obi’s mother that she will kill herself if Obi marries Clara. This event is suggested by another song that the traders sing about a man kissing his in-law (Achebe 53,154). During the trip, Obi sits in the front of the mammy wagon next to the driver and a woman
