1 CSCI 5105 Foundations of Modern Operating Systems Instructor: Abhishek Chandra 2 Multimedia Servers Client-Server Architecture Admission Control Caching Streaming Patching 3 Client-Server Architecture Server Stores a number of video files Streams multiple files to multiple clients Client Requests a video stream from the server Buffers portions of the file Decodes and plays back for the user 4 Client-Pull Architecture Server sends data in response to explicit client request For each frame: Client determines its playback time Client estimates time to request and fetch frame Issues request to the server accordingly Problems: Estimation of request service time Unnecessary client request traffic for each frame
