CSci 5302 HW6 Due: 06 May 2010 This homework should be done in groups of 2 or 3 people. If you wish to work in a group of 3, then you must also do the extra problem indicated. In the following problems involving a computer code, you are not required to hand in the computer source code, but you are required to provide a written outline of the logic if your code or its design. If your answers are incorrect, the computer code might be useful to give some partial credit, but only if it is easy to follow and well described by your writeup. In all the problems which require an iterative method to solve, include a table of iterates and the objective function values. 1. (based on Exercise 6.17 p303) Consider the problem min f ( x ) = - 3 x 1 - 2 x 2 (1) subject to the linear constraints 5 x 1 + x 2 6 x 1 0 4 x 1 + 3 x 2 6 x 2 0 (2) (a) Draw the feasible region as in Fig. 6.11. How many vertices does the feasible region have? Also draw a line showing orientation of the level set for the objective function.
