CSCi 8101: Advanced Operating Systems Programming Assignment 1 Due Dates: Design document due by February 11, 2010 Final submission: February 23, 2010 Goal: The objective of this assignment is to build a process group communication facility in distributed systems for supporting causal and causal-atomic broadcast. This is the first of the three parts of a series of assignments that would finally result in a highly reliable group communication facility. The paper on the ISIS system (by Birman, Schiper, and Stephenson) would provide us the basic design foundations. You would certainly have opportunities to improvise the designs. Problem Statement: In this assignment you would assume that the system consists of a group of N processes and there are no changes in group membership due to failures and process joins/leave. Each process would be given a unique integer valued identifier. Which can be specified at the time of starting the process. Each process would be given the number N . The system would become operational only when all N processes have joined the group. Each process would maintain a
