Sacred Symbols Speculations on Meaning and Causality The Problem How can we explain the parallels between the various sacred symbol systems studied during the semester? Note: As explained before, I have emphasized the parallels between the systems. There are many differences which have not been explored. Secular Explanations Parallels between sacred symbol systems are arbitrary and not significant or meaningful. Differences are more important. Each symbol system has an independent origin. Parallels exist because of humans respond symbolically to similar psychological stimuli. Fear of Darkness, love of light. Jungian Psychology Historical diffusionism
