Unformatted text preview: Health Education History Healthy People Initiatives and how it impacted health education lnterest in Primary Healthcare lncreased in 19703 National governments became more actively involved Examples in the United States National Cancer Act 1971 Occupational Safety and Health Act 1970 Alma Ata Conference First international conference on health and health care held in Alma Ata, Russia in 1978 Sponsored by WHO Conference declared: health as fundamental human right Duty of government to provide it Idea emerged: “Health for all by the Year 2000” Alma Ata Conference WHO recommended that all nations: 1) Identify problems 2) Define strategies 3) Work toward solutions with national action plans United States Endeavors - Office of Health Promotion/Disease Prevention - Work began and was first reported in 1979 in Healthy People document ° Focused on identifying areas of concern, defined objectives, and indicators of success Objectives for the Nation 1990 - Published by US Public Health Service in 1980 - First time a document specified measurable objectives - Other countries followed lead by US 0 Some states even published their own objectives Objectives for the Nation 1990 ' Document had 3 priority areas: 1) Preventive Health Services 2) Health Protection 3) Health Promotion 15 targeted health priority issues 227 objectives in all One was: Establish a data gathering system because many were written with no data. Objectives for the Nation: 2000 - lssued in 1990 known as Healthy People Used same format as the 1980 document Expanded to include 22 health priority areas under the 3 general headings as before Much more data driven document lssued a Midcourse Review in 1995 Objectives for the Nation: 2010 - lssued in 2000 as Healthy People - Expanded to 28 priority areas - Data bank used to form the basis of setting and measuring objectives much better Objectives for the Nation: 2010 ' This document has two overall goals: — Eliminate health disparities — Increase the years of healthy life Objectives for the Nation: 2010 - Review of Healthy People 2010 document NJ passed smoking restrictions in restaurants and bars effective April 2006 What does Healthy People 2010 propose? Objectives for the Nation 2020 - Document released in December 2010 - 13 new priority areas - Priority areas are now 42 Overarching Goals ° Attain high—quality longer lives free of preventable disease, disability, injury and premature death. - Achieve health equity, eliminate disparities and improve the health of all groups. - Create social and physical environments that promote good health for all. - Promote quality of life, healthy development and healthy behaviors across all life st les.
