2 SOLAR UTILIZATION Fan static pressure (Ps) is the fan total pressure difference less the fan outlet velocity pressure. Fan Ps = {Pt(o)-Pt(i)} –Pv(o) Fan Ps = Ps(o)- Pt(i) Note: Pt(o)-Pv(o) = Ps(o) How would you measure the total pressure at the fan inlet and the static pressure at the fan outlet? Ps(o) + Pv(o)=Pt (o) Ps(i)+Pv(i)=Pt(i)
3 SOLAR UTILIZATION Example calculation: At the fan inlet we measure Ps(i) = -1.5 in w.g. and Pv(i) = +0.25 in. w.g. At the fan discharge we measure Ps(o) = +0.75 in w.g. and Pv(o) = +0.5 in. w.g. (Note that the fan has increased the static pressure and the velocity has gone up. Fan Ps = Ps(o)- Pt(i) = Ps(o)-(Ps(i) + Pv(i)) Fan Ps = +0.75-(-1.5+0.25) = 0.75 + 1.25 = 2.0 in. w.g. Ps(i) = -1.5” Pv(i) = +0.25” Ps(o) = +0.75” Pv(o) = +0.5”

4 SOLAR UTILIZATION Fan horsepower = (Q * Fan Pt)/6356 where Q is in cfm and Pt is in.water (note:some sources use 6344 for the conversion to Hp) Note: we usually measure the pressures in a duct with an inclined manometer or similar instrument that reads pressure in inches of water. Remember that 34 feet of water column is equivalent to 14.69 psi.
