Unformatted text preview: EARTHQUAKES and TSUNAMIS Force applied to rocks is called stress . Rocks will release stress through motion, if possible. If friction prevents motion, deformation (changing shape). Initially causes elastic deformation , Once elastic limit is reached, plastic deformation ( = bend or flow) or brittle deformation (= break with earthquakes) Elastic limit, and how rock will deform once that is exceeded is determined by: Temperature – higher = plastic. Pressure – greater confining pressure = plastic. Time- slower stress is applied = plastic Earthquake Waves Types Body Waves Surface Waves P-waves (6-8 km/sec) L waves S-waves (3-4 km/sec) R waves • Richter magnitudes are based on the maximum wave amplitude. • Each step in the Richter scale is 10X the previous step. • The amount of energy released increases approx. 30X for each step. Charles Richter Richter Magnitude at epicenter Magnitude and energy Structure collapse...
