Unformatted text preview: Relative Age Dating Relative Age Dating Geologists use different types of evidence and principles to chronologically order rock units. There are 6 main principles:
1) 2) Original Horizontality – Sediments and lava flows were originally deposited in horizontal layers
Superposition – In an undisturbed sequence of rock, the oldest layer is at the bottom and the youngest is at the top 3)
3) 4) Original Lateral Continuity – Units extend laterally until they thin to nothing or reach the edge of their basin (see previous picture)
Inclusions – If a piece of rock is included into another it is always older 5)
5) Crosscutting Relationships – Any body that cuts across layers of rock is younger than the rocks that it cuts across 6)
