COMM 100 Midterm Study Guide Below is a list of learning objectives for the midterm. This is  not  an exhaustive list,  but something that should guide you in your exam preparation. The exam will  consist of 50 multiple choice questions.  Be sure to bring scantron #30423 and a  #2 pencil!  Scantrons can be purchased at the bookstore. Introduction to Communication What is human communication – Process of stimulating meaning in the mind of  others verbal or non verbal Know the components of the model of communication  Source – creating the message / encodes to give it meaning  Receiver – person who interprets the message being sent. Message Channel Noise – physical or psychological Context Feedback Interpersonal Communication What are the stages of initial interaction? What goes on in these stages? o Stage one: Entry Learning rules communication is structured  o State two: personal Spontaneous exchange messages about attitudes beliefs and valules o Stage three: Exit Decision whether to determine to exit or continue. What are the 3 strategies used to reduce uncertainty? o Passive strategies – watching o Active strategies – 3 rd  party o Interactive strategies – obtain information directly  What are the 3 types of attraction? Be able to identify different types of  attraction. o Physical – the way they look o Task – skill and status  o Social – Personality
