Yorke saw every opportunity and reason to go to war with Britain in 1756 However, when the news reaches the Hague, the pro stroke was nullified Suddenly, there emerged a national consensus within the Dutch Republic for maintaining peace with France If Austria (the ruler of the Austrian Netherlands), was now an ally of France, then the Dutch Republic had no choice but to come to terms with that new international reality The Austrians would give the French free pass across their territory Moreover, the Dutch garrisons in Belgium would be immediately be overrun (they became hostages to the Dutch behavior) In terms of their own national defense, the Dutch felt they had no choice but to come to terms with the French All they asked was for a formal declaration for an assurance that France intended no aggression against their territory France declared its neutrality in the war The Maritime block of power was now split France now had to desert their main supporter since the 16 th century Russia was a natural ally of Britain These peripheral powers came together to unleash on the “demons” But the diplomatic revolution complicated matters There was a divergence of foreign policy aim between the two powers The British (as they proceeded to demonstrate) in concluding the Convention of Westminster, both powers came to terms inline with the motive of signing the Anglo-Subsidy Treaty (to use it as a reconciliation with
