The Triumph of the Allies From Leipzig to Waterloo Monday, December 6 th / 2010 The key moment in this issue (the whole Napoleonic Wars altered the future history of Europe) – December 29 th , 1812 Between 2 Prussian senior officers (Yorck – a Prussian core that had been drove into support the Napoleon invasion of Russia Towards the end of 1812, the Russians slipped in between the Prussians Instead of attacking the Prussians, they sent a representative to join the anti-Napoleonic fight Yorck was under strict orders to fight back if needed Yorck was naturally obedient to his monarch Later on he would refuse to accept the promotion because he claimed to be “untrustworthy” A few weeks later, he wrote home to another senior Prussian officer to complain about the failure of the Prussian ruling class “With bleeding heart, I tear the bobs of obedience and wage wars on my own” – Yorck Within weeks, 10os of thousands were rallying to join in the fight against Napoleon For the first time, a Prussian king made a complete appeal to them – calling on them to rally around a crusade for Germany and the whole of Europe – now back in the fight against Napoleon May 1813, Lutzen and Rautzen (Napoleon gained significant victories) Unwisely, Napoleon agreed to an enemy proposal for an armistice In the early weeks of the armistice, he received a formal proposal from Czar Alexander I to attend a peace conference at Prague to see if the Napoleonic Wars could come to an end through diplomatic negotiation This proposal had been suggested to the Russian Emperor by the Austrian (Metternich)
