Ruth Crawford and William Grant Still were both musical icons for revolutionizing and diversifyingmusic and its history. Ruth Crawford was a woman who grew up to become first of many womencomposers during the early 1900s. She had a passion for music and wanting to teach others.Shewanted to teach children music that she furthered her education in order to do so. While pursuingher music education, she found her love for composition where she ended up getting both abachelor’s degree and a master’s. Crawford was eager to write music later on, which she did, and hermusic was represented as American modernism. Crawford and a friend continued to challenge anddiscover new ways of music such as creating what is now known as dissonance and counterpoint inmusic. Crawford also composed a masterpiece called, string quartet 1931. She sadly died in 1953 dueto intestinal cancer.William Grant Still was an African American man who had a successful career as a composer. His
