Problem set 5 1. If the normal function of the JIL-1 gene product is to make accessible the MX gene, then we can assume that a loss of the JIL-1 gene product will render MX inaccessible. We could make a mutation of the JIL-1 gene that results in loss of function in the gene product. Then, after a period of growth, the quantity of MX in the cell could be observed. If no MX gene product is present, than we can agree that JIL-1 is involved in making MX accessible to transcription factors. If MX is still present, we can expect that JIL-1 is not involved in the histone unwinding of the MX gene, or that other gene products make up for the loss of JIL-1. 2. If the Kr gene product negatively regulates the expression of eve, then the normal function is to turn off eve. So, if Kr is absent, the eve gene should be always on. We could make a mutation in the Kr gene that would lead to a loss of function. Then the embryo could be allowed to grow for a few days, and then the amount of eve gene product could be quantified.
