Abnormal Psychology 9/21/11 GAD: Comorbidity 90% of those with GAD have a second diagnosis o 42% diagnosis of major depression or dysthymia o Also social and specific phobias, IBS Study found 50% of GAD points had personality disorder diagnosis o Most commonly associated with avoidant, dependent, and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder GAD Treatment Benozodiazepines (minor tranquilizers) o Short term relief, modes effects o Not studied longitudinally o Side effects- impaired motor and cognitive functioning o Psychological and physical dependence o Antidepressants- more support Psychological treatments (Behav and CBT) o Same short term benefit as meds o Better long-term, reduce use of meds o CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) superior to psychoanalytic treatment (72% vs. 31%, “ good outcome”) Treatment for anxiety disorders Page 170-171 (cognitive-behavioral therapy, drug treatment, other treatments) Panic disorder with and without agoraphobia Panic attack
