Abnormal Psychology 9/30/11 Mood Disorders and Suicide Chapter 6 Understanding Mood Disorders Mood within normal limits vs. mood outside normal limits How do you determine this? o Intensity o Duration o Impairment/interference in functioning o Outside cultural/ social norms Mood episodes o Major Depressive Episode o Manic Episode o Hypomanic Episode o Mixed Episode Mood Disorders o Major Depressive Disorder o Dysthymic Disorder o Bipolar I and II Disorder o Cyclothymic Disorder Major Depressive Episode (MDE) A. 5 or more of the following during the same 2 week period o Depressed mood by report or observation o Anhedonia- loss of interest or pleasure o Significant weight loss or weight gain or significant changes in appetite o Sleep problems o Psychomotor agitation or retardation o Fatigue/ loss of energy o Feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt o Problems with concentration o Suicidal ideation Criteria B: Symptoms do not meet criteria for mixed episode Criteria C: cause clinically significant distress or impairment Criteria D: are not due to direct effects of substance or medical condition
