Abnormal Psychology 10/5/11 Psychological Dimensions: Cognitive Theory of Depression Learned helplessness- might be a risk factor for depression Depressive attributional styles maintain symptoms Interpretation of negative events: o Internal attributions: negative outcomes are “all my fault” o Stable attributions: situation/future will “always be this way” o Global attribution: “just like everything”-( I failed this test just like I fail my relationships) All three domains contribute to a sense of hopelessness Depressive attributional style for positive events o External- not because of me, luck (I did well on my test because of luck) o Specific- just this situation (did well on an assignment but it was just this one time) o Unstable- will never happen again (I don’t think it will happen again) Maladaptive assumptions: o Ideas about what one thinks they SHOULD be doing “I should get the approval of everyone” Negative self-concept: o Focus on shortcomings, exaggerate them, minimize positive qualities
