Abnormal Psychology 10/24/11 Chapter 8, 5, 10 on Test 3 Psychological Treatment of Anorexia Nervosa General goals and strategies o Weight restoration First and easiest goal to achieve, but poor predictor of outcome Medical intervention recommended when weight is < 70% of expected weight o Behavioral and cognitive interventions Target food intake, body image perceptions Dysfunctional attitudes about body shape, anxiety about weight gain, uncontrollability, self- worth o Treatment often involves the family Somatoform and Dissociative Disorders Chapter 5 Two separate disorders Somatoform disorders: preoccupation with health or physical concerns/ appearance without any identifiable organic, medical condition causing the physical complaints Dissociative e disorders: individuals detach from themselves and their environment; in extreme cases they dissociate from their identity. Somatoform Disorders NOT afraid of symptoms May remain sick for a while Will not go to doctor Avoid doing activities that may make them “worse”
