Biology of Animals 8/30/11 (never tested on names and days) Question one- what is life? o We don’t know! Life= system (whole is greater than the sum of the parts!) Life is an emergent property (function of the interactions between the parts) Question 2- What are you made of? o You are what you eat and drink. You are flesh and blood (something that is solid and liquid.) 2/3 is made up of water. 1/3 is stuff dissolved in water. You are a walking pond. o Life started in the ocean which is made up of water, minerals, and ions. o Test: 1/3-Fat= lipids, Carbohydrate= sugars, Protein= polypeptide, and Nucleic acids = DNA and RNA (4 types of molecules in food in you) (all of these are organic molecules) o Organic molecules contain carbon. (important) Question 3- Why Carbon? What’s so special about carbon? o It can form chains. The chains allow you to achieve orderly complexity. Orderly complexity allows you to build machines (lego robotics). Question 4- Why can carbon form chains?
