Dakota Stroud 10/24/11 Biology 1402-509 Taxonomy and Systematics Homework Week 7 Option 1: Has Climate Change Claimed First Mammal Extinction? This article is about the White Lemuroid Possum, which claims its habitat in the mountain forests of the north parts of Queensland. This possum has not been spotted since 2005. Scientists believe that climate is to blame for the disappearance of the possum because they are highly susceptible to weather. These possums are vulnerable to increase in temperature, that is why they live in the heights of the trees where it is much cooler. It is said that these possums would die if exposed to only about four or five hours at thirty degrees Celsius. The high temperatures in 2005 could be the cause of the disappearance of these animals. If the White Lemuroid Possums are extinct, then they would be the first species found that has died out due to global warming. Biodiversity is the variability of organisms.
