Humanities I Summer Reading This summer, Humanities I students will read one short novel written by a world author (living or dead, but not American) and a collection of documents intended to reintroduce you to history and literature. Next year’s humanities course will develop the advanced analytical skills and habits of mind necessary to thrive in this information age. English “It matters, if individuals are to retain any capacity to form their own judgments and opinions, that they continue to read for themselves. …[W]hy they read must be for and in their own interest.” How to Read and Why by Harold Bloom (2000), p. 21. All rising sophomores are required to read one short novel written by a world author (living or dead, but not an American author). The Hum I English summer assignment is intended to give students a wide range of choices, so that each student may find an enjoyable book. Students should be prepared to discuss the novel on the first day of school. The novel must meet the criteria listed below: • The author must be a writer (living or dead) from a country other than the United States. (Latin and South American authors are okay, as are Canadians.) Next year you will focus on ONLY American writers, so this is an opportunity to discover writers from other parts of the world. • The novel must be one you have not read before. • The novel must be at least 200 pages long. • You may not use any of the following novels to meet the summer reading requirement (since you may encounter these novels during the school year): Achebe, Things Fall Apart Alighieri, The Inferno (poetry) Dickens, Hard Times, A Tale of Two Cities, Great Expectations Dostoyevsky, Notes from [the] Underground Greene, The Power and the Glory Paton, Cry, the Beloved Country Shelley, Frankenstein Spiegelman, Maus I and II Stoker,
