The daphnia’s’ heart rate can fluctuate based on variables that may be in their environment. Therefore, it is an useful DV to experiment on. Many substances can influence the heart rate of daphnia. A few would be, coffee, aspirin, allergy capsules, cooking sherry, and chewing tobacco (Russo & Parrish, 1995). The heart rate of daphnia can also be affected by emissions such as volcanic ash.
