-225- Soft Drinks ±W h i l e s t r i c t l y s p e a k i n g , a ² s o f t d r i n k ³ i s a n y t h i n g t h a t d o e s n o t c o n t a i n alcohol, today the term has come to refer to those sweet carbonated beverages sometimes called ²pop³. ±T h e r e i s n o n u t r i e n t v a l u e i n t h e s e beverages, and the ones that do not contain artificial sweeteners contain a lot of sugar. h e s u g a r i s u s u a l l y p r o v i d e d b y s o m e thing called high fructose corn syrup, which is very sweet and relatively inexpensive. h i l e t h e R D A ( r e c o m m e n d e d d a i l y a l l o t m e n t ) o f a d d e d s u g a r s i s t h e equivalent of 10 teaspoons per day (for a 2000 calorie diet), one serving of many of these drinks contains more than this amount. ±H i g h f r u c t o s e c o r n s y r u p i s b r o k e n d o w n i n t o g l u c o s e a n d f r u c t o s e i n t h e body. h i l e t h e i n t e r m e d i a t e s p e c i e s i n f r u c tose metabolism are similar to those in glucose metabolism, their rates of formation tend to be excessive. h i s i n t u r n m a y l e a d t o s y n t h e s i s o f triglycerides which end up as body fat. ± While the soft drink industry is a multi million dollar one, these sugary drinks are certainly not part of a healthy diet. ± Some soft drinks are quite acidic due to the fact that they contain phosphoric acid. In the long run, this acid can be very hard on the system. ±P h o s p h o r i c a c i d w i l l d i s s o l v e a n a i l i n a b o u t f o u r d a y s . P h o s p h o r i c a c i d a l s o leaches calcium from bones and is a major contributor to the rising increase of osteoporosis. ±S o w h a t a b o u t t h e s o c a l l e d ² d i e t ³ s o f t d r i n k s t h a t d o n o t c o n t a i n a n y s u g a r ? h i l e t h e s e d r i n k s d o n o t c o n t a i n s u g a r, they contain lots of other things. ± Most of these soft drinks contain aspartame. The latest research indicates that aspartame is ²probably safe³. ± The problem with any food product that uses an artificial sweetener is that these compounds tend to increase an individual´s craving for sweet foods.
