Assignment #12 All of the exercises for this week are drawn from pages 290 – 294 of your textbook. Unlike most of our previous assignments, I’m going to modify some of the instructions that are presented in the textbook, so read my instructions closely. Exercises 8.1.6 (pg 290) and 8.1.11 (pg 291): For each of these exercises, (1) Identify the target group, sample and relevant property ( 1 mark ), (2) Say whether the argument is strong or weak ( 1 mark ), (3) If it’s strong, say why (i.e., because the sample is a reliable size and/or is representative of the target group). If it’s weak, say why (i.e., because the sample size is too small and/or the target group is not representative). ( 1 mark ) (4) If the argument is strong, explain how the sample could be altered to make the argument weak. If the argument is weak, explain how the sample could be altered to make it strong. ( 1 mark ) 4 marks for 8.1.6, 4 marks for 8.1.11 Exercise 8.3.2 (pg 291-2) (1) State whether the poll results offer strong support for the pollster’s conclusion. ( 1
