Ann Forrest Stage 2 Major Exploration Project For stage one of this project I turned in information for the Biological sciences major, for I was interested in that, but after research and talk with advisors, I have decided to switch to HNFE. There are many career possibilities with this major, and the two that I am most focused on is a career as a surgeon, or a career in prosthetics/orthotics. I had always wanted to go the medical school route, and that is still the goal, but after lots of research, especially at the career center, I have become extremely interested in prosthetics and orthotics. These two careers require two very different education paths. For medical school, I must complete 4 years of undergraduate school with the science prerequisites, then 4 years of medical school, then 3-7 years of a residency depending on the specialty(probably pediactrics). For a career in prosthetics/orthotics the required education is 4 years of undergraduate school,

Unformatted text preview: then 6-9 months in a post baccalaureate certification program, then a 1 year residency to become eligible for certification, then I must acquire certification from the American Board of Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics, and Pedorthics Inc. For these two careers, there is a ton of long-term career potential. In the surgical field, there is almost never an overload of surgeons, and their national average salary of $411,456 per year is more than enough to stay stable for my entire life. In the prosthetics/orthotics field there are many opportunities opening up because of the advancing technology and increasing injuries. Also the national average salary of $95,667 per year after some experience is a decent pay that can easily support me, which I would say counts as great career potential....
