W hen President David O. McKay dedicated the ground that Brigham Young University–Hawaii would be built upon, he proclaimed that this university would produce leaders “not only in this island, but everywhere.” Since 1955, thousands of BYU–Hawaii alumni have gone on to fulfill this prophecy in their families, communities, and at an international level. To prepare the current generation of students to become leaders themselves, they are provided with numerous opportunities to become leaders on campus. In class, at work, in church, through clubs and organizations, and even as part of the university administration, students hone their leadership abilities by taking charge of their campus community. As a result, they develop attributes such as proactivity, charity, empathy, integrity, and responsibility, which will serve as valuable qualities in both their personal and professional lives. LEADERSHIP AT BYU–HAWAII A University for Leaders Leadership in Academics In every academic program, the Framework of Student Learning develops students into leaders who will be self- directed, active participants in class, and who will take responsibility for their learning. This is not only accomplished through degree offerings, but also through special academic programs open to students in all majors. The University Honors Program is designed for any motivated student who loves learning and believes in a proactive approach to education. Those who complete the program requirements
