Modern science requires intense attention to detail, relentless testing, and the ability to give up old beliefs. 2. Ancient people used astronomy to predict the weather based on observations of the moon, to keep track of time and seasons, and navigational purposes. Ancient Africans, Greeks, and Aztecs used astronomy to predict climate changes and predict rainfall. 3. Sunday and Monday are named for the sun and the moon in English. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday are named for Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, and Venus in Spanish and French. Saturday is named for Saturn in all three languages. 4. Lunar calendars are calendars based on lunar phases with 29 ½ days matching the lunar cycle. The Muslim religion still uses the lunar calendar. 5. Scientific models are conceptual representations created to explain and predict observed phenomena. Geocentric literally means Earth centered and the Greeks geocentric model is a model of the universe with a spherical earth at the center of a great celestial sphere. 6. The Ptolemaic model is a model explaining planetary motion. It explains that each planet moves on a small circle, an epicycle, whose center around earth on a larger scale, a deferent.
