Jennifer Jacob October 19, 2011 Phys 180 Intro to astronomy Chapter 4 HW 1. Speed tells how fast something is moving in a certain amount of time and velocity is a description of both speed and direction. A car which is traveling at 50 mph but constantly making turns is maintaining a speed but not direction therefore not maintaining velocity 2. Acceleration is a change in velocity whether in speed, direction, or both. The acceleration of a falling object is the acceleration of gravity which is 9.8m/s 2 . Because acceleration is measured by speed or velocity divided by time and velocity contains a time component, acceleration will then be measured in distance/time multiplied by time, therefore time will be squared. 3. Momentum is the product of an object’s mass and is velocity. The only thing that can affect an objects momentum is force. Force will either accelerate or decelerate an objects momentum. Net force is the overall force; so to say an object can only be affected by a net force means that all of the forces acting on an object must be considered. 4. Freefall is falling without any resistance to slow you down. In freefall you are weightless because you are not being held to anything. The Astronauts are in a constant state of freefall because they are falling with the earth’s orbit thus they are weightless in the Space Station. 5. Newton’s first law states an object moves at constant velocity if there is no net force acting upon it. For example, a car that is at rest will stay at rest unless a force acts upon it to make I move. His second law states Force=Mass x acceleration. For example, you can throw a pen farther than you can throw a person because the difference in mass results in the difference in the
