Jacob Jennifer Jacob English 152 November 6, 2010 “Hamlet” Most people look at Hamlet as the victim in this tragic play by Shakespeare. A closer look unveils Hamlet’s true nature. Hamlet displays selfish and egotistical behavior, calling into question his role as the victim. This character is very self centered. He has a distorted sense of reality that leads to his own self pity, and he has no remorse for the crimes he commits or any type of concern after the deaths he causes. The most important and most revealing evidence of Hamlet’s true nature lies in Hamlet’s relationship with Ophelia. As this paper will show, Hamlet cares most for himself, alone. Hamlet’s selfish nature is almost immediately revealed after his encounter with his father’s ghost. “But I have that within which passeth show, these but the trappings and the suits of woe (14). In this passage, Hamlet makes it known that neither the murder of his father, or his mother being widowed and tricked into marrying her husband’s murderer evoke feelings of sadness or pity for anyone else but himself. When prompted to avenge his father’s death, he does not even feel the expected reaction – anger; instead, he hesitates in performing a promised act of revenge to take time to pity himself. On several occasions, Hamlet contemplates suicide, when considering his mother’s loss and the love both she and Ophelia feel for him, is the upmost of selfish actions. “Oh, that this too, too sullied flesh would melt, Thaw, and resolve itself into a
