October 9, 2008 The Skull - Inferior View of Skull o Styloid process: lateral to occipital condyles, stight of muscle attachment o Carotid Canal: lateral (superior) to the occipital condyle through which the carotid artery enters o Jugular foramen: opening through which blood moves through jugular brain through skull back through to the thorax (can also contain nerves). Located lateral to the occipital condyle o Foramen lacerum: an opening which allows for passage of ascending branch of pharengial artery to pass into the skull region (superior to occipital condyles) o Foramen ovale: mandibular nerve exits the skull and moves into lower portion of the head and inerbates the mandible (lateral to foramen lacerum) - Superior view of fetal skull o Calvarium: cranial bolt (the entire view looking down), skull cap comprised of: Frontal bone: makes up skeleton of forehead region Occipital bone: located at the back of the skull Parietal bones: two bones that comprise the top and lateral portions of skull between frontal and occipital bones o Coronal suture: suture that is located posteriorly to the frontal bone o Lambdoid suture: connects occipital and parietal bone (connects parietal bone posteriorly) o Anterior fontanelle: located in centre of anterior parietal bone margin and posterior frontal bone margin, soft spot of infant (will pulse up and down with each heart beat, there is no osseous tissue in this region, watching change in pressure with each heart beat) Not completely ossified until infant is about 1 ½ to 2 years of age o Posterior fontanelle: located in centre of posterior parietal bone and anterior to occipital bone o Sutures (opposing edges of flat bones) are not completely ossified at birth, and do not even meet each other, instead are head together by ligaments and other tissues that overlap the junctions This allows the free edges of the bone to overlap. During the process of birthing, the head is capable of compressing slightly in order to narrow in size and allow passage through the birth canal o If sutures of skull cap ossify prematurely (in addition to fontanelle), the head will be disproportionally smaller than normal Causes Microcephaly Cephalic (anterior or head region) and Micro (small) Leads to severe mental impairment as brain tissue cannot develop normally o Hydrocephaly results from excess production of cerebrospinal fluid, internal
