September 16, 2008 Nucleus - Involved in cell replication - Regulates metabolic activities in cell (it is responsible for the cell’s protein synthesis) - Proteins are made from amino acids o Proteins can be structural or enzymatic Proteins - Sequence of amino acids are arranged reflect genetic make up of the cell - mRNA is responsible for protein synthesis o mRNA is responsible for protein synthesis - RNA can move and exist in nucleus and cytoplasm, however the DNA can only exist in the cytoplasm - mRNA is the go-between from nucleus to cytoplasm - Transcription: 1 st step in protein synthesis o Produces single strand of RNA from the DNA in nucleus - mRNA passes out of nucleus into the cytoplasm - Translation: 2 nd phase in protein synthesis, mRNA is decoded by ribosomes which directs the building of the protein molecule o Ribosomes are the decoders of mRNA o Information that is decoded builds tRNA which is responsible for picking up and building amino acids in the correct order to form a protein - Steps in Translation o Initiation: beginning of the protein structure o Elongation: addition of amino acids to form polypeptide o Termination: completion of protein - Protein can be used in cytoplasm or translocated out of the cell o Ex. hormones (one cell to another area) Cell Replication - Carried on continuously to replace constant death of other cells - Used to maintain homeostasis - Approximately 3 billion cells are born and die in 60 seconds
