SYLLABUS - PROJECT MANAGEMENT – aps1001hf – September to December 2011 Instructors: Keith Farndale ([email protected]) Class size: Cap of 50 for each of the two sections Prerequisite: None, but … those with some engineering work experience will “get it” much better than those without. The instructors feel that the course is relevant for students in any engineering department, and we do get a diversity of departments represented. Office hours : See “staff information” on the academic portal. Marking Scheme (both sections): 5% participation : to be assigned to participation within the classroom, within the presentations of other teams, and by replies and possibly by discussions by email and Blackboard. 20% mid-term test: short answer, long answer, a few multiple choice. 25% team project : See more info about the team project in a separate document. 10% oral team presentation: on team project. 40% final exam: short answer and long answer, bullet points are encouraged. If you score <65% on the mid-term, then the proportion changes 10% midterm and 50% final. Teams: Three students in a team, formed immediately after the latest date for dropping the course. Participants can self-create their teams in advance, or be assigned by the Teaching Assistant. Required Textbook: Project Management: A Managerial Approach , 7 th ed, Meredith and Mantel, Wiley 2009. Available in bookstore. There may be used ones from previous courses. Optional reference: A Guide to the PM Body of Knowledge , 4 rd edition, Project Management Institute, 2008, known as “ The PMBOK Guide ”. This is a useful reference for organizations maturing their project management, but we recommend NOT to buy this book just for the purpose of this course. Outline:
