The official language movement is an official movement to make English the official language of America and to enforce this movement in different aspects of American living. These aspects include education, voting, businesses and politics. This movement has been passed in over 20 states to make English there official language. A work used many times in the information about the Official Language Movement is bilingualism which is defined as the ability to speak two languages. “Citizenship requires passing a test on American History in English. If that’s true we do not have to create ballots in any other language except English”. This quote was from United States former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, this statement shows the opinion that English should be the official language of America because in order to become a citizen you need to know English in the first place. My personal opinion is that English is the official language and it should be the language that is used in schools, store, companies, and politics. There should be no other options on ballets or automated phone services. There should be no, press one for English or press two for Spanish. If someone if REQUIRED to pass a test on American History in English in order to become a citizen then it should be a requirement that you must fluently speak, write, read, and understand English and if you do not you should not be allowed to be a citizen until you do.
