Week 9 Capstone Checkpoint Part of civilization includes the understanding of the process that has created the earth. This makes geology important since it is science that teaches us to understand the world we live in. The science of geology and its links to resources is used to narrowing things how a bit or learn the past of the earth. There are links to literally all natural resources and geology. For example iron, the smelting of iron was based on the knowledge not only on the chemistry of iron or the ore minerals but also on coal used to fire the ovens. It was the search for coal in the UK and then Europe that caused the beginnings of geology because of the knowledge learned for the exploration. Steno’s basic principles, original horizontality, cross-cutting, lateral continuity, and superposition, were all tools used to identify the probable position of coal layers and their relation to other geologic strata. Without coal, oil, natural gasses and other forms of energy there would have been neither industrial revolution nor market dynamic.
