Learning Objectives Be able to sketch an antibody and label the: Fab and Fc parts, variable and constant regions, heavy and light chains, antigen binding sites. List 6 ways in which antibodies “fight” bacterial and viral infections. Differentiate between the 5 antibody classes based on structure of the Fc part. Differentiate between the 5 antibody classes based on their function in the body. Describe how antibody class switching results in the production of antibodies other than IgM. Explain how class switching is involved in immune memory. Explain how only a few antibody genes can result in over a billion different antibody proteins. Describe the process of somatic recombination. Understand that this happens during embryonic growth so that a person is born with all the antibody-producing capacity he or she will ever have. **Explain how activated T H cells activate B cells to produce antibodies.** Explain why only SPECIFIC B cells get activated, and not just random B cells. Explain the difference between T-dependent and T-independent antigens. Explain why protein-conjugate vaccines offer better protection than polysaccharide capsule vaccines. Understand why some of the B cells you produce will recognize “self” antigens. Describe what happens to prevent these “self”-recognizing B cells from becoming activated.
