The study of child development The rise of a new, scientific discipline • What is the longest standing question about development? • Philosophical origins • Wild Boy (What hypothesis did Itard test? What were the conclusions? What were the limitations of this study? This study highlights three important points. What were they? Central questions of development (You should be able to explain what these thematic questions are asking and give or recognize examples of each question.) Questions about continuity (What are the features of continuity and discontinuity?) Questions about the sources of development Questions about plasticity (critical periods, sensitive periods) Questions about individual differences (What are the sources or what factors contribute to individual differences?)
