Overview of Mixed-Signal Testing Mixed-Signal Circuits combine analog and digital elements. i. Small circuit examples Comparator, ) - Σ A/D converter, PGA, VGA, PLL ii. IC system examples – (mixed-signal) WLAN – single chip Bluetooth – single chip Single chip CMOS radios Cellphone circuits Modems Disk drive controller Etc. Why test mixed signal devices? CMOS/BICMOS manufacturing process are subject to i. Catastrophic defects, Opens & shorts. ii. Parametric failures, particularly analog/RF functionality. Testing eliminates bad manufactured IC product and greatly improves the quality of the manufactured electronic system. See my notes “Why Test” for more details. Test Engineer/IC Design Engineer Test Engineer works with IC design engineer to bring a manufactured IC design to market at low cost.
