ABSTRACT: - In recent scenario, in India there is a cutthroat competition in any commodity market. Along with various commodity markets, the Pharmaceutical market is not an exception to this. So before launching of any new product existing drug, various parameters must be considered to create a place and survive in the market. Every drug manufacturer tries to develop new type of dosage form of the already existing drug or same dosage form with some modification to increase patient compliance. This survey is carried out to find out the market potential for few of the most widely prescribed, Iron, Calcium and Cefadroxyl preparations in Maharashtra. Basic objectives were to analyse market potential and current requirements of pharmaceutical market. In this survey mainly 700 chemists and 350 physicians were interviewed for their opinions about these preparations. These chemists and physicians are selected from various geographical regions of the state. The findings of the survey indicate that the main factor to be considered in any formulation is efficiency followed by cost of the preparations. Other contributing factors are type and kind of preparation, flavor of the final product. From physicians’ opinions mainly dosage forms, patient compliance, i.e. aesthetic aspects of the formulation prove to be important to increase the prescription frequency for above mentioned active ingredients. KEYWORDS: Market potential, Iron, Calcium, Cefadroxyl, systematic survey. 2

INTRODUCTION In the 50 years since independence the Indian pharmaceutical industry has evolved significantly. Initially the multinational companies were major players who raise their images by providing low cost formulations and few specially life saving high priced products to the masses. However increasing government pressure against imports compelled the MNC’s to set up manufacturing towns based in India. But government bent on developing the domestic industry brought in a series of laws that dramatically changed the equation in the country’s pharmaceutical sector. Since 1970 the government of India introduced the Indian Patent Act 1 , followed by the DPCO (Drug Price Control Order 1970) 2, 3 and FERA 4 , which reduced the profitability of MNC’s in INDIA and curtailed their involvement in the Indian market. The patent act introduced process patents instead of product patents that helped the domestic players to produce reverse engineered goods without having to pay royalty 5
