An assessment of self-reported health status outcomes in a nationally representative sample of elderly persons diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis: OBJECTIVES: To utilize Web TV technology as a tool to measure HRQOL of elderly persons having Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) and to describe patterns in drug treatment, history of surgical procedures and socio-demo-geographic characteristics in a nationally representative sample. METHODOLOGY: Cross- sectional survey research design. Random digit dialing survey procedures were used to recruit a sample of 403 elderly individuals from across the United States. A subsample of 79 individuals having Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) completed a SF-36 (version?) survey. Eight SF-36 domain scores and Physical and Mental component summary scale scores (PCS and MCS) were computed and compared with general US population. RESULTS: Compared to the general population, our study sample performed worse with respect to nearly all the SF-36 domains except Mental health (MH) and Social Functioning (SF)

Leading 92.45% of sample exhibited use of at least one of the available OTC medications and a 58.22% of sample opted for prescription drugs whereas 52.8% opted for natural/herbal products. Significant differences (t=0.88, p=0.003) were found between males and females with respect to only PCS score. Elderly persons used OTC medications and prescription drugs to a greater extent than herbal and natural products. Joint replacement surgery was the most common surgical intervention performed and Arthroscopy was the leading choice for surgery being considered in the future.
