Religare (Latin) – “to tie/bind”; “to join/reconnect” Something beyond us that binds us together W.C. Smith – challenges the notion of some “essence” of religion; Instead – religious people Can believers recognize themselves in your description? Religion is basically what people do/believe (creates the ‘essence’ of religion) Study of religion = acts of religious people When people change, religion changes Insider/Outsider Debate DO you have to be a member of a particular religion to gain insight on the particular religion? Or can/do you have to be an outsider? Personal benefits/insight are advantages to being an insider If you were an outsider, the advantage would become the disadvantage, etc. Comparative Religions
