World History Lecture Notes- 10/10/07 I.) How is the first settlement of what is now the US most commonly represented? II.) What were the main strategies used by English capitalists and their allies to create and consolidate transatlantic capitalism? III.) What were the main ways in which members of the emerging transatlantic working class engaged these strategies? First Settlement- first native people were the Native Americans - first non-native people settle were abandoned slaves left by the Spanish - first English settlement ( who arrived late on the scene) was Jamestown 1607 - 1807 the British state that the Slave Trade is no longer legal - People arrived in 1607 under the leadership of people in shareholding companies who were early capitalists and were there to make profit that would allow them to pay tribute to the English Crown and for their own personal wealth. - People who came, came as indentured servants ( 7 years of hard labor for those who brought them to new world in exchange for land)
