Level-Scheduling Level-Scheduling Mixed-model manufacturing systems are used to produce many different  products without carrying large inventories.  The effective utilization of these systems requires that a schedule for the  manufacture of different products be determined.  For Just-In-Time (JIT) manufacturing, which require producing only the  necessary products in the necessary quantities at the necessary times, the  quantity of each part used by the mixed-model manufacturing system per unit  time should be kept as constant as possible.  There should be very little variability in the usage of each part from one time  period to the next. This is called leveling, or balancing the schedule.

Level-Scheduling In the ideal situation, the consumption of each part is constant over time, which is  represented by the straight line in Figure 1. However, any feasible sequence of mixed- models results in a non-zero deviation from the ideal schedule. In Figure 1, the  deviation is represented by the shaded area.
