World History Lecture Notes 9/12/07 Situating Ourselves – The Global Garment Industry I.) What do we know about the clothes we’re thinking of buying/have bought? II.) What else do we need to know? III.) How can learning more help us? A) Engage contemporary globalization. B) Situate ourselves within it. - Greater coming together and falling apart due to Globalization. Global Garment Industry- will be our example of Globalization - significant factor since the early 16 th century. - How the clothes you where connect you to people in other parts of the world. - many of our clothes were made in: Mexico, Honduras, El - Salvador, U.S.,Thailand, India, Vietnam - U.S. territories in the pacific (and are not subject to the same labor laws, and are not made by U.S. citizens) can say that they are made in the U.S. - China is the fastest growing single source of clothing bought in the U.S - The labels don’t tell consumers how much the workers are being bad, if their working conditions are good, etc. -
