James Fisk UGC112 Laticia McNoughton 5/1/11 The movement against Leopold was done in the name if humanity. Started by Morel it became the first international human right protest. Morel alone would not have stood as a threat however, add in the number of leaders and renowned authors that took some sort of action, there was a definite threat made. The movement was considered a humanitarian movement because it was put in place to stop Leopold from killing and raping many. He was going above and beyond and this movement was put in place in order to stop it. The Congo was targeted instead of other mass murders conducted by Western Imperialism for many reasons. One reason was because of the book Heart of Darkness , by Joseph Conrad. He took a journey along the Congo during this time and witnessed a lot of what was going on and he wrote about it. This alerted many people and caused for action to be taken. Another reason is because the ones who would be conducting the humanitarian movement
