Alexandria Jones Lab Partner – Chem 3105- 592 TA-Divya Jyer Fractional Distillation Purpose: To separate a mixture of methanol and water, two miscible liquids with somewhat different boiling points. To compare the difference between simple and fractional distillation methods. Reaction & Physical Properties Table: Compound MW Amount Bp C Methanol (CH3OH) 32.05 20.0mL 65 Water (H2O) 18.02 20.0mL 100 Procedure: 1. Work in pairs for this experiment (as is the norm for the rest of the semester) so you can make simultaneous measurements of volume and temperature. 2. Your TA will assign your group the simple distillation procedure or the fractional distillation procedure. 3. Each group will perform their respective distillation using their own methanol: water solution aliquot. 4. You will share your groups’ data with one other group performing the other distillation procedure. 5. Remember to record your partner’s name and the other group members’ names. Data/Observations:
