Alexandria Jones Lab Partner- Valerea Chemistry 3105-592 TA-Divya Title: Oxidation of Alcohols; Trends in Infrared Spectroscopy Purpose: To prepare a library of aldehydes and ketones by oxidation of the corresponding primary and secondary alcohols. To compare the infrared (IR) spectra obtained for all the compounds in the lab section and to explore trends in the carbonyl absorptions. Reaction & Physical Properties Table: Procedure: 1. Weight (tare) an empty round-bottomed flask (50 mL), then add the appropriate mass or volume of your alcohol for 2.5 mmol. Add a magnetic stirrer and 10mL of dichloromethane as solvent. Note: For a solid alcohol, weight out the calculated mass. Mass of alcohol (g) = molecular weight of alcohol 0.0024 mol For a liquid alcohol, measure the calculated volume. Volume of alcohol (mL) = mass of clcohol (g)/density(g/mL). 2. Add 0.60 g (2.6mmol) of TCCA to the above solution. Cool the flask in an ice water bath in a beaker. 3. Weight out 0.0040 g (0.0025 mmol) TEMPO in a small conical vial. Dissolve the TEMPO in about 1-2mL of dicholoromethane and add this to the reaction mixture with stirring. 4. Remove the reaction mixture from the ice bath and allow it to warm to room temperature with stirring. 5.
